Uncomfortable Dinner Reservations
Here is an example of turning an awkward situation into an easy exchange of politeness, by using a rather genteel method of Advanced English.
Good evening Madam. May I show you to your table?
Good evening Godfry. I hope all is well with the restaurant tonight. Yes of course, I'll be seated now. My dinner companion will be along shortly.
Excuse me Madam, but you seem to be a little upset. May I inquire as to your well being tonight?
Oh dear Godfry, you are so perceptive. You are a gem, to be sure. I am upset tonight, very upset.
I am sorry to hear that Mrs. Woods. Is there anything I can do to alleviate your troubles?
No, I'm afraid not Godfry. Tonight's dinner will not be a pleasant affair. The gentleman I'm meeting is about to be let go from the company, and I have been chosen to enlighten him with the unfortunate news.
My goodness Mrs. Woods, may I bring you a before-dinner-drink so as to relax you a little?
Godfry, that's just the thing I need! Blessings to you dear friend. I'll just sit and await my drink and my dinner companion. Wish me luck.
Of course Madam, I wish you a very good evening and good luck with this unpleasant situation. I'll return shortly with your aperitif.
Thank you so much Godfry.
You are very welcome Mrs. Woods. 5.....
