Confronting your Drycleaner
Here is an example of turning an awkward situation into an easy exchange of politeness, by using a rather genteel method of Advanced English.
Good morning Mr. Chang.
Good morning Mr. Brown. How may I assist you today?
Well, there seems to be a problem with this suede jacket I had dry-cleaned last week. When I prepared to wear it out last evening, I noticed a particularly nasty stain on the left elbow. It's right here, do you see it?
Why yes Mr. Brown, it's quite noticeable. However, I do not believe myself or my expert staff is the cause of such a mishap.
Mr. Chang, I have never had occasion to bring any of your dry-cleaning services to attention before. Your store and staff are impeccable. However, in this case, with my expensive suede jacket, something untoward has taken place. My jacket is ruined. I would very much like to be compensated.
I am so sorry Mr. Brown. Yes of course, "Changs Fluff and Fold" will compensate you immediately. In future I will personally supervise your more valuable garments before the dry-cleaning process begins. Would that be to your satisfaction Mr. Brown?
Absolutely Mr. Chang, you have my most sincere gratitude for handling an awkward situation in such a courteous manner. Thank you so much, and please have a wonderful day.
I wish you a nice day as well Mr. Brown. We are happy to serve you and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
Good day.
Good day.
