Asking for Directions
Here is an example of turning an awkward situation into an easy exchange of politeness, by using a rather genteel method of Advanced English.
Excuse me Sir, I seem to have lost my way. Would you be so kind as to assist me in locating the Court House on Beechtree Avenue? I have an urgent appointment there.
Why of course. It's my pleasure to of assistance. Is it the main building you are trying to locate, or the smaller offices?
Thank you so much, you are too kind. It is the primary building I need to find, which contains the office of the CEO.
Oh, certainly. I understand precisely where you are going. First you need to take the number five bus. It will be stopping here in just a few moments. Bus number five will take you directly to the corner of Maple Drive and Beechtree Ave. The Municipal Court House is directly to your left once you exit the bus.
My kind Sir, your directions are superb! My heartfelt thanks for being such a grand help to me this morning. I will be at my appointment with plenty of time to spare.
It is no problem what so ever sir. I am happy to be of assistance. Please have a nice day and a successful meeting at the Court House.
I'm sure I will now that you have pointed me in the proper direction. Please, I wish you a lovely day as well. Thank you again.
You are very welcome. Good day.
Good day.
